How do i make a living room with dark blue carpet look modern?

We are moving into a new house, (renting so i don't really want to replace the carpet) the carpet is darkish blue, its a long room, i really want to know how to give a modern cosy look, can paint the walls, not very good with designing rooms! any suggestions would be gratefully received!! thanks in advance!
